OK, I finally gave in and added a donate box to the sidebar.

I've resisted for the longest time, but I keep eyeballing add-ons that could make FPC a better place for everyone. However, the best add-ons are not free.

FPC has been funded completely from my own pocket. And while that means I don't have anyone to answer to, it also means that no one else is sharing the bills.

There are only a few options to raise funds when running a board like this:

  • Charge a membership fee (never going to happen!)
  • Run ads (this is something I've been considering)
  • Offer premium services, like dealer galleries (been thinking about it, but need to find the right software)
  • Solicit donations (let's give it a try!)

Unlike some boards and mailing lists that get pushy about donations, I'm not going to beg or attempt to send you on a guilt trip. I've watched other sites do this over the years and I think it's distasteful.

One option I'd like to try is recognition for members who make a donation: An "upgrade" to a new membership level (still free) called "FPC Supporter." At this point I can do this manually if someone makes a donation. But it's up to you. I know some people don't want public acknowledgement.

Let me know your thoughts.

I know the feeling Karl....

I'm trying to keep the lights on at my forum as well!

I have a pen raffle going on right now, and that has helped previously!

Regards,

Frank

It was the easiest thing to put into place.

I think the long-term solution is going to involve advertising and possibly cooperative ventures with bigger dealers and manufacturers. But we need to get more activity going on first.

Can you donate thru the sidebar on the mobile site??

You can use a mobile device, but you will need to scroll to the bottom and click the "Full version" button to go to the desktop version of the website.

Then, pick the amount you want to donate from the drop-down menu and click the Donate button. It will take you automatically to Paypal's mobile site.

I think the donation sidebar is a good idea! If you were to run sponsored advertisements, I would not see them, because I have AdBlock Plus installed on my machine.

When people buy pens from me, they don't always say where they saw a particular pen, but I know that I sell pens here on FPC from time to time. I watch the page views I get here and on that big forum based in the Netherlands. Lately I will get more page views early here then the page views on the other site will catch up within a couple of days or so. But, what it tells me is that the people looking for pens here has increased exponentially in about the last year.

I appreciate your efforts Karl!

Michael

Thanks, Michael, for both your feedback and your contribution!
